12 AWG PV Wire is the lightest gauge in the UL 4703 photovoltaic wire range, designed for low-current DC circuits where a smaller, more flexible conductor gets the job done without waste. It is not meant to replace 10 AWG as the default residential string wire, instead, it fills a specific niche: module-level connections, short lead extensions, and circuits where the current is low enough that a thinner wire is both code-compliant and more practical to install. Its smaller diameter and lighter weight make it noticeably easier to handle in tight spaces, behind modules, inside junction boxes, and around module-level power electronics where routing room is limited.

Core Uses
12 AWG PV Wire works best in circuits where the current is well below the threshold that demands 10 AWG. It is the natural choice when the wiring task is short, the current is modest, and a thinner conductor makes installation faster and cleaner.
Module-Level Power Electronics (MLPE)
Systems using microinverters or DC power optimizers generate relatively low current at each module position. 12 AWG wire connects these devices efficiently , lighter to pull, easier to dress behind the module, and simpler to terminate in the compact junction boxes that MLPE systems use.
Short Lead Extensions
When factory module leads need a short extension to reach the next connection point, 12 AWG wire provides a compact and flexible solution. It avoids the unnecessary bulk of heavier wire on runs that may only be a meter or two long.
Low-Current Auxiliary Circuits
Monitoring leads, sensor wiring, and other low-power DC circuits within a PV system can use 12 AWG wire where code permits. Its smaller profile keeps auxiliary wiring from competing for space with the main power conductors.
Application Scenarios
Microinverter-Based Residential Systems
In residential installations using module-level microinverters, each panel connects to its own inverter through a short DC cable. The per-module current is typically 10–12A , well within 12 AWG capacity. Using 12 AWG instead of 10 AWG for these short connections saves material, reduces cable bulk behind the array, and simplifies the installation for crews working in tight rooftop spaces.
DC Optimizer Wiring
Power optimizer systems route DC current from each optimizer to a string-level conductor. The optimizer-to-trunk connection is short and carries moderate current, making 12 AWG a practical and code-compliant choice for this segment of the circuit.
Small-Scale and Portable Solar
For very small PV systems such as garden installations, shed rooftops, portable solar kits, 12 AWG wire provides adequate capacity in a lightweight package. Its flexibility and small bend radius make it easy to work with in non-standard mounting situations where heavier wire would be awkward.
Selection Guide
12 AWG PV Wire is appropriate when circuit current stays comfortably below 25A and cable runs are short. It is a good fit for:
- Module-level connections in microinverter and optimizer systems
- Short lead extensions where 10 AWG would be unnecessarily heavy
- Low-current auxiliary DC circuits within a PV installation
- Small-scale systems where total current is well within 12 AWG ampacity
For standard residential string wiring, 10 AWG remains the default. If the circuit carries higher current or runs a longer distance, 10 AWG or 8 AWG is the safer and more common choice.
Packaging
12 AWG PV Wire is available in spool lengths of 500 ft, 1000 ft, and 2000 ft, as well as custom cut lengths for project orders. Standard packaging uses cardboard spools or plastic reels for smaller quantities, and wooden reels for bulk shipments.
