What Is Home Battery Storage?
A home battery system stores electricity in a large rechargeable unit (typically lithium-ion or lithium iron phosphate) installed in your garage, basement, or on an exterior wall. It charges from your solar panels, the grid during cheap off-peak hours, or both - then discharges when you need it most.
Think of it as a personal power reserve sitting in your house.
Why Are People Buying Them Now?
1. Blackout protection. When the grid goes down, a battery keeps your lights, fridge, internet, and medical devices running - sometimes for 24 hours or more depending on your usage.
2. Saving money on electricity bills. Many utilities now charge more during peak hours (evenings, hot afternoons). A battery lets you store cheap power and use it when rates spike. This is called "time-of-use arbitrage."
3. Getting more from solar panels. Without a battery, excess solar energy goes back to the grid - often at a low buyback rate. A battery keeps that energy for your own use after sunset.

How Long Do They Last?
Most modern home batteries are warrantied for 10–15 years or a set number of charge cycles (typically 4,000–6,000 cycles). Real-world lifespan often exceeds the warranty period. Degradation is gradual - after 10 years, expect roughly 70–80% of original capacity remaining.
