What Does 8.7/15(17.5) kV Mean?

U₀ = 8.7 kV

Rated voltage between the conductor and earth or metallic screen.

U = 15 kV

Rated voltage between phase conductors.

Uₘ = 17.5 kV

Maximum system voltage associated with the rating.

Select the rating to match the system and its operating conditions. Voltage-rating reference.

Medium-Voltage Cable Basics

Why the Extra Screens?

Semiconductive layers help control the electric field around the insulation. The metallic screen is a separate component, coordinated with the earthing design.

Screening Is Not Armor

The copper tape is an electrical screen, not a substitute for mechanical armor. Route protection must suit the installation.

Accessories Matter

Joints and terminations must match the voltage rating, insulation diameter and screen construction. Stress control at cable ends is part of a complete MV connection.

Background: Prysmian electrical field control · Nexans termination stress control.

Dimensions & Weight

Select the voltage first, then the conductor cross-section per core. The tables show key structural dimensions for three-core cables; weights are approximate. Confirm the final cable data for accessory selection and installation planning.

Specify the Whole Cable System

Current & Heat

Current capacity depends on the installation method, ambient conditions and grouping. A cross-section alone does not define ampacity.

Water & Mechanical Exposure

Water-blocking and mechanical protection are construction choices. A standard PVC sheath alone does not establish suitability for every buried or wet route.

Installation Planning

Allow for the overall three-core cable diameter when planning ducts, bends and pulling. Match three-core terminations to the voltage, insulation diameter and screen arrangement.

General scope: IEC 60502-2 covers 6–30 kV cables (Uₘ up to 36 kV); the applicable specification for a 26/35(40.5) kV project must be established separately.

Professional Cable Manufacturing

Coordinated production processes support consistent conductor formation, cable assembly and finishing. Material selection and production planning follow the required cable construction and order specification.
