Product Overview
MC4 Y Branch Connector 3 to 1 combines three parallel PV strings into a single output, the mid-range option in the Y branch family. It handles the parallel connection density that sits between the simplicity of a 2 to 1 branch and the capacity of a 4 to 1 branch, serving systems where three strings share a common orientation and need to merge before reaching the inverter or combiner. Like all Y branch connectors, it replaces a small combiner box with a single sealed component. But at three inputs, it starts to deliver more meaningful BOS savings, eliminating not just the combiner enclosure but also three sets of input terminals, mounting hardware, and the associated labor.

Core Uses
Three-String Parallel Combination
The direct application. When three strings of matched modules need to combine into a single circuit, the 3 to 1 Y branch handles the parallel connection in a compact, sealed package. No combiner box, no terminal blocks, no additional enclosure.
Combiner Box Reduction in Medium Systems
In commercial systems with multiple groups of three strings, replacing each group's combiner box with a 3 to 1 Y branch connector reduces equipment count, mounting points, and installation labor. The savings multiply across the system.
Application Scenarios
Medium Commercial Rooftop Systems
Commercial rooftops with 30–60 panels often divide into groups of three strings per MPPT input. A 3 to 1 Y branch connector at each group eliminates the need for rooftop combiner boxes, keeping the installation cleaner and reducing the number of components that need mounting and weatherproofing.
Ground-Mounted Arrays with Grouped Strings
In ground-mounted systems where tracker rows or fixed-tilt sections naturally group into three-string clusters, the 3 to 1 Y branch provides a field-level combination point. The combined output then runs to a central combiner or directly to the inverter, depending on system architecture.
Selection Guide
Use the 3 to 1 Y branch when three matched strings need to combine and the total output current stays within the connector rating. All three strings should be identical in module count, orientation, and tilt angle.
If only two strings need combining, the 2 to 1 model is sufficient. For four strings, use the 4 to 1 variant.
Installation Tips
- Mount the Y branch connector in a position that allows natural water drainage, avoid orientations where the branch point faces upward and could collect water around the cable entry seals.
- Secure the connector body to the racking or cable tray with UV-resistant cable ties to prevent wind-induced movement and strain on the cable connections.
- Verify that all three input strings are producing similar voltage before mating the connectors, a significant voltage mismatch between parallel strings indicates a wiring error or shading issue.
